NEF Masterclasses : Invigorating Professional Development

Keep up to date, watch out for NEF masterclasses, and ensure that you never miss out on a chance to attend our exciting professional development opportunities.

Welding and Fabrication Masterclass at TWI

The Welding and Fabrication Masterclass, which was hosted at The Welding Institute, covered the latest in welding and fabrication technologies including the teaching of these skills with new methods introduced by AFTWE. The day provided resources and ideas for immediate use in teaching and proved very successful with the delegates.
It was the second time we have run this event in response to requests and the class was sold out very quickly. It has proved to be very popular, so please keep an eye out for a re-run next academic year.

“An excellent day – interesting from start to finish.”
Ainsley Fairhurst, Kirklees College

Recycling: 5 Years Time Masterclass at Closed Loop Recyling

On 20 June, NEF held a Recycling Masterclass at a world leading plastics recycling plant in Dagenham.  Closed Loop Recycling exists to recycle resources to maximise their value and minimise their environmental impact for the benefit of future generations. Delegates were treated to a guided tour of their state-of-the-art facilities where they reprocess 35,000 tonnes of mixed plastic bottle waste per year - nearly 10% of the bottles currently collected for recycling in the UK, saving approximately 52,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Nick Cliffe, Marketing Manager at Closed Loop Recycling spoke on the challenges in the technologies to separate, process and re-use plastic bottles and packaging, highlighting the role of packaging design, behaviours, policy and regulations. The link to chemistry as well as sensor and computing technologies was also explored. Guest expert speaker, Sam Haig from Axion Consultants, added to the day by covering the issues behind recycling of vehicles, domestic appliances and other electrical and electronic goods where EU directives on End of Life Vehicles (ELV) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) apply.

“Could not fault the day.  Enthusiastic participants and speakers, excellent day, well worth the early start!”
Christine Irvine, South West College

“The speakers were clearly passionate about their work.  I was left with the impression that there would not be a question I asked where they would not be able to answer.  They made the plant tour very interesting with their very detailed explanations. The day was fantastic.”
Robert Wegg, Hull College

Innovative Teaching of Engineering and Product Design at Bournemouth University

A second masterclass held this month was Innovation in Teaching of Engineering and Product Design hosted at the School of Design, Engineering and Computing (DEC) at Bournemouth University.

The masterclass coincided with the university’s Festival of Design & Innovation: a showcase of student work during their time at the university.

The day involved discussions with key members of staff and a tour of the product design workshops.  University staff highlighted the importance of developing practical skills in all design and engineering students.  Staff also discussed the development of flexible pathways involving collaborations with local FE partners.

“Excellent venue and University staff to support the event. The day was really very interesting and well managed.”
Karen Dyke, Oxford & Cherwell Valley College
