Intelligent College Network. A Chair Is Elected!

On 8 February, the latest NEF Intelligent College Network meeting was convened – and what a success it was! Heather MacDonald, Chief Executive of The Sheffield College and host of network meeting, addressed members. The agenda included discussions about models for work experience and the relationship to the Enterprise Academy. In addition, the Network was also addressed by the Director of Training at the Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Centre (Catapult) who announced a tender to our Network members.

The Intelligent College Network was established last year by NEF following the publication of its report: The Intelligent College in 2011. The aim of the network is to create a specialist interest group that brings together members to share their thinking on best-practices in STEM related subjects, to drive economic development through innovation, horizon scanning and developing fit-for-purpose provision, particularly in new and emerging technology areas.

The newly elected ICN Chair, Audrey Kingham, Deputy Principal of Curriculum and Business Development at Tyne Metropolitan College, said: “I am delighted to be the Chair of the Intelligent College Network. For too long the skills required for STEM industries in this country have been neglected. We need a joined-up approach to STEM and I believe the network has the potential to make a real difference. Sharing good practice between members is important, but we must also support STEM at a wider level by lobbying government and other influential organisations.”

Currently, the Network is gathering responses from its members on the impact of the EFA’s proposal to remove weighted funding to the sciences. If you would like to take part in our response, please email Dr Sarah Peers sarah.peers@ikegroup.org highlighting the potential impact of this change on your college
