Innovation in Bio-based Industries

Date: 10 July 2013 : 10:00 - 16:00

This masterclass will look at innovation in the key sector of agriculture and the impact on the future requirements for training and development in this area, including how FE Colleges can ensure their provision addresses the needs arising from new techniques in farming, in particular plant genetics and crop management. The event will showcase the new NIAB facilities including the new Reception Centre, which features a modern and progressive design aiming to achieve the highest sustainability rating and zero-carbon balance in operation, using locally sourced and sustainable materials wherever possible. The site includes extensive field and glasshouse exhibits to demonstrate innovations in horticulture to address the issues of climate change, food security, reduced resources and nutrition.

Who is this masterclass suitable for?
The session is ideal for:
•   Curriculum leaders and lecturers in land-based colleges and rural studies, also in sustainable building and biotechnologies
•   Biology, chemistry and physics teachers, nutrition and bio-science lecturers and other FE staff interested in applications of science and technology in plants for food and non-food uses
•   It will also be of interest to lecturers in construction, in particular sustainable building

NIAB Innovation Farm is keen to link up with small to medium size businesses (SMEs), particularly in the East of England (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk & Suffolk) who are eligible to join their free business assistance programme. Hence we would welcome colleges introducing representatives of local employers to NIAB through this event.
