Recycling: 5 Years Time

Date: 20 June 2013 : 10:00 - 16:00

What will the UK waste landscape look like in five years’ time? There is no doubt that the waste management industry has seen constant change since the 1970s; we’ve seen the introduction of site licensing, mobile compaction vehicles, outsourcing of municipal waste contracts, landfill tax, the new technologies and recycling rates in excess of 40 percent. Speakers at this event hosted by Closed Loop Recycling will offer their thoughts on the changes that have been since 1970s, what is still to come, and the impact on other sectors.

This Masterclass is a wonderful chance for lecturers in any area of science and engineering to find out about the future of recycling and what it means for the green agenda. The day will include a tour of Closed Loop's facilities as well as talks and presentations on recycling of plastics. The day will touch upon the impact of the WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) directive and new requirements for automotive plastics recycling.

This event will provides lecturers, curriculum managers and sustainability champions an opportunity to see behind the scenes of a state-of-the-art plastics recycling plant, to get up close to new environmental technologies. Closed Loop Recycling exists to recycle resources to maximise their value and minimise their environmental impact for the benefit of future generations. Its facilities have been highlighted by government as an exemplar of practice in the environmental technologies sector. Their plant reprocesses 35,000 tonnes per year of mixed plastic bottle waste, nearly 10% of the bottles currently collected for recycling in the UK, saving approximately 52,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Guest speakers include experts in WEEE and automotive plastics recycling from Axion Consultants.

Who should attend?

  • College lecturers general sciences, ICT and engineering including automotive technologists
  • Curriculum managers looking to exploit the growing potential of waste management as a training need for employers and learners
  • FE staff such as sustainability managers and 'green champions' looking to understand the wider implications of the circular economy on training & education
  • Specialists in sustainability, green IT, environmental technolgies and science, waste management and recycling, and designers who want to understand the waste implications of packaging and product design.

Please note: The price of £72 + VAT is offered to FE College staff only. Please contact us if you are not an FE College and would like to know more about costing.
