On March 4th, a special session, Voice of the Future 2015, where young scientists and engineers put questions to the government chief scientific adviser, MPs and science ministers
NEF’s Dr Chris Fellows, Amie Doidge and Dr James Hayward put Ministers under the spotlight and asked the following:
Q1: "Only 19% of the workforce in STEM subjects are female. One possible reason for this is the need for early academic researchers to move institution every few years and lectureship positions increasingly being offered as short term positions. Do you think that pressure should be put on Universities to provide greater job security for early career researchers?"
Q2: "What are the most effective ways to encourage young people to pursue STEM?"
Q3: “How much do you believe we should be spending on research and development (as a percentage of GDP) and what measures do you propose to reach that target?”
Q4: “What transferable skills are needed to enable to STEM individuals to move between sectors and obtain a career in academia, industry, business or government?
Sir Mark Walpole, Chief Scientific Advisor and Liam Byrne Shadow Minister for Universities and Science :”we should have better fiscal policies to support STEM education, research and development.”
